We typically work with four main types of structure in our projects: 

Arches 

Arches are usually used as entrances or gateways into the garden, and look great situated over paths. They can be made from wood or metal, either of which can be softened by growing climbing plants up and over the frame. Unlike more substantial structures, they won’t give you much more than a passing shelter. But if you are looking to mark out a section in the garden and invite visitors to explore, arches could be the solution. An arch adds character and interest to your outdoor space. By framing a favourite view or breaking up lawned areas, a garden arch will bring a touch of intrigue to even the smallest of gardens.  

Arbours 

In its simplest form, an arbour is a seat with an attached roof, usually made of wood. Arbours work well placed in a sun trap in the garden or positioned where you are guaranteed the best view of your garden. Their size also makes them perfect for tucking away in heavily planted areas. You might also want to use an arbour as a seating area close to the house, perhaps on a patio or decking, to enjoy your morning coffee or simply take some time out.  

Arbours lend themselves to growing plants brilliantly, especially as most designs come with a trellis already integrated into the structure. Classic climbing roses, bougainvillea and English cottage garden favourites like sweet peas and clematis all make great flowering climbers on an arbour. Or you might want to consider grape vines, peas, squashes, or even runner beans for an unconventional but heavy-cropping addition.  

Pergolas 

Pergolas are semi-roofed structures, with beams across the top of the supports, providing some, but not total, cover. Traditionally, a well-planted pergola should offer enough cover to act as a rain shelter. The likes of clematis, jasmine, roses, honeysuckles and vines will climb pergolas quickly, though bear in mind that not all offer year-round cover.  

With the added options of wall panels, planters and louvred roofs, there are so many options to adapt your pergola to your requirements and aesthetic.  

Treat your pergola like an outdoor (albeit wall-less) room, a place to sit and socialise, a walkway, or to provide shelter for shade-loving plants, like ferns. 

Gazebos 

A gazebo delivers a stunning centrepiece for any garden. Finished with furnishings and plants, your gazebo will be a beautiful place to relax, entertain and enjoy your surroundings. With the British weather unpredictable at the best of times, adding a gazebo to your garden makes it easier for you to enjoy your outdoor space come rain or shine, providing an outdoor room to enjoy year-round.
